The Seniors' Centre for Excellence was established in 2008 to coordinate support services and programs to enable seniors to remain in their homes for longer periods of time. Located in the lower level of the Mapleton Community Health Centre, the program provides a suite of services and coordination of seniors support programs in the Township of Mapleton (lead municipality), the Town of Minto and the Township of Wellington North.

Brokered Homemaking Program

Help is at Hand!

The Seniors’ Centre for Excellence is pleased to be offering a Brokered Homemaking Service in Mapleton, Minto, Wellington North, and Centre Wellington. These handy brokered workers can be hired to help vacuum, laundry, meal preparation, light pet care and much, much more! If housework is getting to be too much of a chore, why not give one of our handy helpers a try so you can spend your time and energy doing things you enjoy?

The cost for a housekeeper is $14/hr with a minimum of 2 hours per visit to be arranged around YOUR needs and schedule. Every worker is police checked, screened and trained by the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence.

To qualify for this service you must either be a senior or someone living with a chronic condition.

Congregate Dining Programs

All congregate dining programs happen on a set day for each town, and run from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. All faith denominations are welcome! Though we try to keep to this schedule, please double check our calendar or give us a call in case unforeseen circumstances have forced us to change the date. In the winter months, please note if the North Wellington School Buses are cancelled, then our programs are cancelled as well. You can check bus cancellation information by following this link: www.stwdsts.ca.

These programs are different every month and though they usually feature a speaker, sometimes it’s a game or a group sharing session. Regardless of what the program is, there is always good food and great company at these events so come on out and see for yourself!

The presentation is free and starts at 12:30 p.m., but if you would like to join us at 12:00 p.m. for a hot catered lunch the cost is $10, you must register 72 hours in advance.

Drayton– 2nd Friday of every month

Palmerston– 2nd Wednesday of every month

Clifford– 3rd Friday of every month

Harriston– last Wednesday of the month

Arthur– last Thursday of every month

SMART Gentle Exercise Programs

Please check with your doctor before beginning this or any other exercise program. Please note the description beside each exercise program listed to make sure you are attending the class that is right for you!

HIGH IMPACT:  If you have been doing some sort of physical exercise and consider yourself to be in good physical condition, this class is for you! Slightly higher intensity than the regular class, the routine consists of an aerobic warm up, aerobic endurance, cool down, balance, strength and flexibility training. This class will improve your overall fitness level and prevent you from falling.   

REGULAR: If you have been doing some form of exercise and consider yourself to be physically active, this class is for you. Come out and enjoy 1 hour of exercise which will aim to improve your cardiovascular endurance, strength, balance, range of motion and prevent you from falling - guaranteed to get you moving and improve your functional fitness!

LOW IMPACT -If you have been out of exercising for a while and would like to ease back into physical activity, then this class is for you! Slightly shorter at 45 minutes in length, with the option to do the exercises from a seated position, this program is gentle, fun and will help you maintain or improve your functional fitness to keep you independent.

Arthur and Harriston Exercise Opportunities

If you have been doing some form of exercise and consider yourself to be in good shape, this class is for you! 1 hour of strength, balance, and cardio exercises guaranteed to get you moving. Led by the knowledgeable and fun Janna Dodds, RN Parish nurse. This class is $2 per person per class. For more information on either of these classes, please contact Janna Dodds on 519-338-5863.

Art Workshops

We are pleased to be partnering with local businesswoman, Donna Hirtle, to offer one art workshop per month at the Palmerston Library located at 265 Bell Street.

Donna has years of fine art experience starting with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Guelph where she experimented in wide variety of mediums. Fast forward to present day - she is now the proprietor of Studio Factor in Drayton – a place to communicate, create, be yourself and of course, buy all your art supplies!

These classes will be on the third Wednesday of the month, and the cost will be $5 per person per workshop.

Registration is required with the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence so we are able to provide adequate supplies.

Friendship Circles

Mount Forest- every Tuesday 10:30 am

Wish you had someone to enjoy a cup of coffee with? Many older adults find that over time they may lose important people in their lives. Dave Vervoort, Therapist with Mount Forest Family Health Team, and Helen Edwards, program coordinator at the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence have teamed up to help increase your connections in the community. Friendship Circle happens every Tuesday at 10:30 am at the Mount Forest Pentecostal Church. On the third Tuesday of the month, the Golden Hearts host a luncheon and a speaker - lots of fun, so plan to stay late that day!

Palmerston– last Wednesday of the Month

We run the same type of Friendship Circle in Palmerston but less frequently. Located in the Parlor of the Palmerston United Church, you can find us having a coffee and a biscuit while catching up on the news in Palmerston on the last Wednesday of every month. All are welcome – we hope to see you there soon!

Walking Groups - FREE

We are pleased to be offering walking groups in various communities with the kind support of our municipalities. You are more than welcome to join us at the arena nearest you! Exercising is the best thing we can do for our health, so don’t let the bad weather hold you back – come out and join us where it’s dry and warm. All that is required is clean walking shoes and a smile!

Please note that Drayton, Palmerston, and Harriston walking groups are year-round. Arthur walking group is available from November - April.
