Message from Mayor John Green

Welcome to Mapleton!

A new municipality was made through the amalgamation of the Townships of Maryborough and Peel and the Village of Drayton on January 1st, 1999.

The Township consists of approximately 52,000 hectares of rich, productive farmland, where dairy, beef, broiler chickens, eggs, hogs and cash cropping are major agricultural enterprises. Our population of over 9,300 residents live throughout the Township and Villages of Drayton, Moorefield, Alma, Glen Allan and Rothsay.

Our villages and small communities are picturesque, with a strong feeling of pride and community belonging, displayed by the people who reside there. Mapleton has a number of new residential subdivisions where we can accommodate newcomers who would like to get away from the hustle of city dwelling and live in a small rural setting. We are fortunate to have a number of small industries and manufacturing factories helping provide employment to our residents. Mapleton is open for business to attract and encourage future development around our urban centres.

We have many acres of parkland throughout our villages where sports of all kinds are played in the summer and our arena looks after the needs of our winter indoor sports. We host the Grand River Conestoga Dam that creates a wonderful lake for swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing and a home for over 400 cottagers during the summer months. In the winter months we have snowmobile trails, skiing and hiking.

We have two seniors' centres for subsidized living to assist our aging citizens and to help them enjoy many senior activities.

We have a vast variety of churches in our area to provide spiritual leadership to gather and worship. The municipality also has several schools including Parochial Mennonite schools, a private Christian School and four Upper Grand District Public Schools.

Mapleton is home to the Drayton Entertainment Theatre where top theatrical performances are enjoyed from May 1st to October 1st. This historical theatre has been completely modernized with new seats and air conditioning for the comfort of 385 patrons per show.

Our population has a large percentage of Mennonite people, some of whom still travel by horse and buggy and farm by horse drawn equipment and machinery. These people are very industrious and excellent farmers who tend to cluster together and live a quiet easy-going lifestyle. We also have a large Dutch population who settled in our township after World War II. These immigrants were mostly farmers who brought new ideas to our area. They introduced us to large dairy and broiler chicken farms. For more information on our history, please contact our office to inquire about purchasing a history book including two new volumes entitled History of Maryborough, and Portraits of Peel and Drayton.

Mapleton is situated approximately 30 minutes from Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph and other town centres including Elmira, Listowel, Fergus and Elora.

Mapleton is our home. It's a great place to live. Please visit us, explore our many miles of picturesque countryside and consider making Mapleton your future home.
