Building Permit Guides and Documents
Below you will find guides, forms, additional documents, and related information that will help you with submission of your Building Permit application.
Other information that may be applicable to your project
Electrical Safety Authority
In Ontario, electrical work is governed by the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) and the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), not municipal building codes. Almost all electrical installations, including repairs, replacements, and new wiring, require a notification of work filed with the ESA before starting, separate from building permits.
ESA certificates of acceptance may be requested by the Building Department.
Gas installations
While the Ontario Building Code (OBC) focuses on structural and general building requirements, gas installations in Ontario are regulated under the Technical Standards and Safety Act, 2000, and specifically managed by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Every gas installation that occurs, the appliance must show compliance with TSSA standards.
Ontario One Call
Before digging in Ontario, you are legally required to contact Ontario One Call at least 5 business days in advance to request a free underground utility locate. Call 1-800-400-2255 or submit a request online at OntarioOneCall.ca to prevent damage to pipes, cables, and wires.
