Why should I vote?

Voting is an important part of our democracy and provides residents with the opportunity to have a voice in shaping the future of their community. By casting your vote, you are choosing representatives who make decisions on local policies, services, and priorities that impact everyday life. Municipal government plays an important role in our community by maintaining roads and sidewalks, ensuring access to safe drinking water, providing snow clearing services, supporting recreation opportunities, strengthening the economy and helping keep our residents safe and well-served.

Am I Eligible to Vote?

You are eligible to vote in the 2026 Municipal Election, if on Voting Day, you:

• Are a Canadian Citizen
• Are at least 18 years old
• Reside in the Township of Mapleton, or are the owner or tenant of land in the Township of Mapleton or the spouse of such owner or tenant
• Are not prohibited from voting as defined below

Who is Not Permitted to Vote?

• Individuals serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
• A corporation
• An individual acting as an executor, trustee, or any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
• An individual conviced of a corrupt practice in the 2018 Municipal Election, as described inthe Municipal Elections Act, 1996

How Do I Know if I am on the Voters' List?

Until August 12, 2026, you can visit Register to Vote Ontario. You can check whether you are on the voters' list, confirm or update your school support, and add yourself to the voters' list if you are not already included.

Nomination Period

In order to become a candidate you must file a Nomination Paper with Mapleton's Municipal Clerk. Nominations can only be filed between Friday, May 1, 2026 to Thursday, August 20, 2026 from 8:30a.m. to 4:40p.m.

You can file your nomination paper at the Township of Mapleton Municipal Office (7275 Side Road 16, Drayton).

Who Can Run for Office?

• A resident of Mapleton or the owner or tenant of land in Mapleton, or the spouse of an owner or tenant
• Be a Canadian citizen
• Be at least 18 years old
• Not be prohibited from voting by law

Who is Not Permitted to Run for Office?

• Any person not eligible to vote in the municipality;
• A judge of any court;
• A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons; 
• An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment.
• Any person who by reason of any violations of the election campaign financial requirements or violations for not filling the financial statements pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.

What Municipal Positions can I Run for?

Every four years, in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, the Township Clerk, acting as Returning Officer, conducts elections for the offices of:

• Mayor (1 at large)
• Councillors (4 at large)
• County Ward Councillor for Ward 2
• School Trustees for:
  • Upper Grand District School Board (1)
  • Wellington Catholic District School Board (1)
  • French Public School Board (1)
  • French Catholic School Board (1)
